The job of a Poet Laureate is to celebrate people and place.

From May 2024 - May 2025, Scots/First Nations poet and co-author of Seeds to Solutions, Anne Sikking,

will post work here on Incredible Edible themes.

Former Poet Laureate (2021/2022) for Los Angeles South Bay arts magazine TESS,

and Inaugural chair of Glasgow's City of Poets, we asked Anne to tell us something about her approach to the post...

"What I know about being a poet laureate is that, if I do the job well, the people being celebrated feel better, the places look better, and, as a bonus, I feel better too.

Poetry, like music, has capacity to unite our Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, and Spiritual selves, and like music, exists in all of us. Our stories are all unique, but common to all of us is an innate sense of rhythm. After all, the first sensation we are aware of from the womb is the beating of another heart...

With this always in the background, I start by setting myself some rules, (even if they change...) For examples:

  • How many times will I upload something? (At least monthly.)

  • How long will the piece be? (Not too long, less than 42 lines)

  • Will it rhyme? (Probably, here and there).

  • Will it be suitable for young people to read? (Yes.)

  • What topics will I address? Political? (Probably). Nature? (Certainly.)

Let's see what happens...
